In addition to the death of compassion and the arts you have logged, on instructions from above the armed forces are also removing any acknowledgement or celebration that PoCs have made significant contributions. The government has removed quotas and generally tried to pretend that only rich white people exist. It seems like madness. As someone from the same tectonic plate that you currently inhabit, I too make response by growing food and making responsible choices for the planet. One day, that wobbly house of cards will come down.

Give food and save them a trip to the supermarket!

Sorry to hear the rain came back with a wind behind it, your poor poppies...

And now the ridiculous plays are growing along the lawn. Shooting up sideways from their beached trunks. So fast in all this rain. They are just too big!

I love that you tracked everyone's temperatures and tectonic plates!

What a scattered but connected family.

Your son's potatoes are impressive.

Clearly, he inherited the green thumb lol.

I hear a deal is on the horizon.

These spineless politicians.

I have much to say about that, but I won't hahaha

Happy New Week, Cecilia.

Very connected. My kids are amazing . We are all in touch almost daily thanks to the internet. I heard about a deal too. I will be watching closely as usual but backing down to bullies only enables the bully. Still, let’s see how fast the people get their Snap back-pay - and now they are talking stimulus checks?

Happy Tuesday evening Cecilia

So glad to hear :) that’s the real win + you are an awesome mom.

It will be at least a week for things to return to normal.

I had a colleague who had THREE flights cancelled today.

He could not make an important meeting.

He had 2 backup flights and those failed him too.

I suspect the vote will be on Wednesday to open up.

Let’s see.

I think chaos was the objective / it was obvious that Trump was just going to gleefully double down. At the very least he clearly showed his colours.

big sigh Cecilia.

The food pantries near us will accept food donation, of course. But, they point out that money donated to them is a good idea. They have access to food sources at much lower costs than I do. Sometimes they can buy 4x as much with a dollar than I can.

I find it interesting that you noted plate tectonics. Try to avoid living at the boundaries. Earthquakes and volcanoes can happen there. We are visiting family right now at a boundary in the area near Mts. Rainier and St. Helen.

The administration is targeting food pantries which is beyond my comprehension but hopefully they survive. There is a great need. I have always been fascinated by the plates. So thought I would throw that in. Mainly because NZ straddles two - hence the alps right down the middle and the earthquakes and volcanos. Quite the volatile little country.

I love looking at your gardens. Your son’s garden looks awesome. I dream of having a bigger garden full of sunlight. I have space, just not the light. Now I have a few pots on the patio that don’t give me much production. We are supposed to get 10cm of snow today and tonight. I have to bring my pot of rosemary in and hope I can keep it alive inside. I don’t think it will like moving inside.

Rosemary does not like shocks - next year try to bring it in when the house is the same temp as outside. It does not mind growing inside but will sulk at the MOVE inside. Spread some newspapers around the base as it might drop leaves and these will be ideal for drying.

John just sent me a picture of their snow coming down. It is early!!

My friend that drove down from Iowa to visit helped me plant 80 onion starts and about the same number of garlic cloves. Many of them are starting to peek up from the soil, stretching upwards. I am pulverizing leaves to spread over them as the weather turns chilly. We are expected to have the first freezing temps on Sunday night. Our lemons on the lemon tree in a pot are finally starting to turn yellow. I so want them to make it so I can cook some delicious desserts with homegrown lemons. We will cover the tree and insulate her as much as possible without harming her, I hope. So glad your zucchini’s are growing, mine didn’t do very well this year. Building two more beds and straightening the workshop is on the to do list this fall. We are asking the master gardener members to bring non perishables to the November meeting to be distributed to multiple food banks in our small Arkansas town. Your idea of a complete meal is a good one.

I have seen figures all wrapped up for the winter. It will be interesting to see how the lemon goes. Lots and lots of mulch and water until it freezes - I imagine - to keep the roots at an even temp. Let me know how it goes! I know that Diane has her lemon in a big pot and brings it inside. I did that few a few years with a lemon but never got fruit. Wrapping it is a good idea. Fingers crossed!

We brought it in today. It’s in my sewing room along with the front porch plants. I have a south facing window in there so hopefully, it will do well. I had bought several cattle lick tubs a while back. We took two of them and put the lavender in one and the lemon tree in the other one. That way, I can water them in the house. I can’t wait to pick lemons! They are yellowing up nicely.

Our police department always has some kind of “drive” going to help the community. They just started one for those on SNAP who have run out of money. We have a low income senior residence with many where English is not their primary language. They have been blindsided as they had no idea what was going on! I’m so ashamed of this regime!!

Sounds like you have a great community there to support - and as you point out - inform each other. The elderly will be hit particularly hard, I am glad you have been able to pinpoint that need - we are gathering as many drivers as we can to get food into homes, The thing we have to keep in mind is that this will be long term - even the courts can’t get it started up again so we need to create systems we all can sustain.

I love how you have the rhythms of nature figured out, mother nature smiles sweetly upon you and yours. I've been working with the food banks here along with individual community centers, families and refugee groups. helping wherever I can, and learning how best to do that as I go -

We have vicious winds here and the house came with hollyhocks planted in front of the south-facing house wall. I've only had two stalks laid down by wind. The red ones are almost as tall as the house, the white ones are more bushy and compact. Both sets are now leaning over the path to catch what November sun there is. Our winds tend to blow west to east so there are no direct assaults on the hollyhocks, I guess.

Those hollyhocks sound perfectly placed. Often we have to live in a garden for a while to know these things! 😃

P.S. I have heard that food banks can purchase more and better food for less money and that people often donate foods that are not useful (e.g. lots of cereal, but no powdered milk). If you can donate produce, that's great, or set up some other way to give it away.

Cecilia At The Kitchens Garden's avatar

The one we work with face the same problems. It is often hard to make a meal with what is there on a given day. Best to ask before donating I think . And as you say / feed your neighbours! Ask them over for dinner and send them home with left overs!

Can you grow vines against those walls -- runner beans, cypress vine, pole beans? If you can put in masonry screws, a diamond-spaced string grid will support the vines -- or wire tomato caging slung from the top of the wall if you can't use screws, and they will cut the wind. Just move your tall plants another 18" forward.
