goodbye beach . hullo garden
And the day stretches out ahead with nothing to do but a walk along the beach maybe a little lunch then a ride home.
There is something particularly delightful about the last day at the beach - when everything is packed back into the car and for some reason it never packs back on quite tightly as it did before. Even your clothes have relaxed a bit. You have left the rented house always with a little bit of relief.
And the day stretches out ahead with nothing but a walk maybe a little lunch then a ride home. Unfortunately baby protested being strapped into his car seat for the ride home. And endurance test for all involved.
But that is exactly how our day went. We wandered up the beach - there are pathways literally for miles. The walk was quiet and companionable. We read a few of the signs.
Can you read this one?
Then we drove back to the city and the compact city garden.
This part of the garden ⬆️ reminds me of that seaweed picture from yesterday!
And here are the zucchini. ⬇️ I have such trouble growing courgettes/zucchini in Illinois - there is a particular grub that burrows into the stem, cuts off water and nutrients and the plants will suddenly wilt and die. The adult is a day-flying moth that looks like an orange wasp. The bug is a nightmare. I am hoping they do not have those stem drilling grubs here in Melbourne.
My friend in Texas used to say that in her town you have to be careful to lock your car in the summer or you will come back to a bag of courgettes in the back seat!!
The zuc’s were sad and dry when I got home but perked right up within 30 minutes of watering. The sandy soil we have here needs a lot of amending- it does not hold water well at all. It is taking lots of compost and compost takes a long time to make. I am thinking of buying sheep pellets or local mushroom compost from a place down the road.
And now I had better get the washing machine going. We have lots of laundry to get through after a few days away with baby!
Tip of the day ~ laundry liquid. Ignore the instructions on your laundry liquid container. It is in the manufacturer’s best interests for us to use way more than necessary. Use a 1/4 of the recommended liquid especially if you have baby clothes to wash. Unless your clothes actually are dirty. Which here in the city is frankly - seldom!
Have a fab day!

The garden is looking fabulous. In southern Alberta, zucchini grew like weeds. I planted three seeds and had enough to feed the entire neighbourhood. Popping a bag on someone's porch or back seat was common. Your beach holiday looked wonderful. Obviously, baby didn't want to go home!
Stanley Tucci's spaghetti alla nerano recipe is a good way to use up a lot of courgettes. Well, technically not his recipe (it dates back to the 1950s reputedly from a little restaurant Maria Grazia, named after the owner) but he popularised it recently in a TV series. Courgettes, cheese, garlic, basil, olive oil.
The beach trip looks utterly gorgeous. I'm a little envious of your clear blue skies as here in the UK we're fast heading towards winter. Clocks change in two weeks.
