The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett read by Cecilia from TKG
"When Mary Lennox was sent to Misselthwaite Manor to live with her uncle everybody said she was the most disagreeable-looking child ever seen. It was true, too".

Frances Hodgson Burnett (24 November 1849 – 29 October 1924) was a professional novelist and playwright. This was unusual for the period but not as unusual as we are lead to believe. History is heaving with strong determined opinionated women who pursued their own incomes - they were more prevalent than we have been taught. Frances wrote books and plays to make money.
I imagine her as a stout strong handsome woman in silks and furs surrounded in trunks sailing back and forth from England to the Americas with a determined look on her face. She had endured poverty, tragedy, divorce and notoriety, she was not frugal or particularly well behaved and I really like that about her.
I read two chapters a day and I don’t edit as I go along. You will hear me reading exactly as I hear myself. Mistakes and miss-steps (sneezes) and all. Gods know, there is enough perfection in the world without me adding to it.
Every reading will be around 30 minutes - the perfect length of time for a bed-time story. Or an afternoon chapter before a real siesta - (of which I am a great fan).
