Occasionally he snags my eyes. I know his eye sight shifts in and out of focus but when a baby catches your eyes in his, a person cannot look away. You just can’t. No date scones for you, I say.
Oh, the note about the tea ladies sounds wonderful. The personal touch is so needed in medical care here in the US, it feels more and more like a business. Having someone doing such homey things when you don't feel well and need to really feel taken care of is a gift.
I'll try the scone recipe. I make them often-----but plain. My husband likes things "plain" no surprises when you bite into something. We usually have them with sweetened strawberries and whipped cream.
Most wondrous thing to know about pigs ... the porcine eye most closely (and uncannily) resembles the eye of a human being in it's structure-... the iris etc. Take a look next time ... with thanks to Rudolf Steiner for this little gem of wisdom. Also with thanks and much gratitude - I take a natural thyroid remedy/medication derived from piggy... Words can barely describe how much we "owe" these sentient soul beings.... Thank you Celi, for the dignity and honour that you accord to those four-legged species with whom you share your home turf.
I love revisiting the farm and especially Tima. speaking of prey animals,, I'm reading the most wonderful book called, Raising Hare, by Chloe Dalton. I learn so much about rabbits/hares. She inadvertently finds and cares for a hare in the English countryside. She writes beautifully, thoughtfully, with such delicacy and respect for this creature.
Oh, yum. I came back to say I made the date scones for breakfast this morning. I am still working with a primitive kitchen set-up in my rental cottage, so I cut them out with my plastic water bottle (the glasses are too big). I forgot to put sugar in the dough, but I used a lot of dates and candied orange peel and then I mixed up a big tablesppon of cinnamon sugar and sprinkled it on the tops before baking. It made seventeen mini-scones and I ate two for breakfast. I'll have more at tea time. Shall I freeze the rest?
That is a good question Sharyn. I am cutting my leftover scones in half and toasting them for my morning tea. But I think you could freeze them and do the same when partially thawed? I have never tried. I don’t see why not. Especially as they sound so delicious.
Lemon trees, scones and tea ladies. You are most definitely in Australia... A lot of local healthcare here is still non-industrial, personal and full of human kindness. I think there is less fear here because it's socialised; the question is more how than how much. I think I knew babies didn't see colour for a while, they have a far sharper sense of smell than adults to help identify their mothers and safe people.
ooh, now you've gone and done it, i'd love to hold a morning baby and try to catch it's eye and when it falls back asleep, have a warm scone with melty butter. sounds perfect.
I think your focus is just right here. Gardens have time to rest, and to get compost added so that life bursts from the soil when the time comes. This is right for these days. Glad you're sharing bit by bit.
I do a little in the garden every afternoon at nap time. They nap I dig!! 🤣 I pruned the roses yesterday and you are right about the compost. My compost corner will be the tomato patch next year! Can’t tell you how much I miss the cow poop from
The farm. !! There are horses around here so I am going to see if I can find a few bags of horse poop - mixed with mushroom compost that should be good
😆😀 that was more than I expected to wrote in a comment!!
Love to see your thoughts put into words fly in during my morning mail rush! Race over to say hello to Louie and find out how the Mums are! One lives, one learns . . . you know I was medically trained and have managed to have two issue of my own - never knew about babies; sight > distance or b/w . . . you ARE still a teacher, Celi . . . best for the day and your veggie garden looks plain enviable :) !!!

This recipe is lovely plain, also. That is how the tea ladies made them. Maybe put the dates in half the dough so you don’t miss out! Dates are good!

As you know I have such a soft spot for the pigs! And babies. 😆
Yum! I'm going to try your date scones soon, Celie. Maybe tomorrow. But I'm going to add candied orange rind because it goes beautifully with dates.
That does sound like a great addition!!
Honestly, if a baby locking eyes with you while flailing like a tiny skydiver doesn’t center the soul, nothing else will.
I vote we all take a “make the damn scones” moment today.
Oven on, expectations off. Thank you Cecilia :)
It is impossible to break the gaze when he has locked on. I know he can’t see much detail but he does find a persons eyes.
I truly believe they can see because they stare right at you…

Oh that sounds like a lovely book! I will we if I can find it. Thank you Pat!
I always enjoy hearing about the pigs.
Yes you do!! Same here.

Now I'm hungry, Celi! Beautiful post. 💞
Evening Rea! I ate too many!
They do sound lovely. I made some chewy lemon crackle cookies with sourdough discard yesterday and did the same thing - ate too many!
I would too! 😊
Back at birth weight is such a milestone! Hurray!
The scones look delicious. Bookmarking the recipe with thanks!
Yes! I was pleased. He is doing well!

I have always found it interesting how dependent human babies are. With all our technological evolution the human body is still so high maintenance.

Precious! Such a sweet time.
I will make these scones in the next couple of days. They’ll be a treat in the school lunch box.
Yes they will - and you can replace the dates with whatever dried fruit they prefer. Raisins. Cranberries. Whatever they love.
Lemon trees, scones and tea ladies 🥰🥰 love a good scone, your recipe shall be on my weekend agenda 🤤 love you c xx
I am always grateful when I see you pop in. The tea ladies in the hospital were so welcome!

Sometimes you just gotta write about manure 🤣. Happy Wednesday morning from here.
It's amazing watching babies eyes coming into focus over the course of the first year!
Those scones look delicious ;-)
The scones are great! Only two left!!
