You know, I remember growing up and seeing my dad in the kitchen just as much as my mom. He wasn't exactly Gordon Ramsay, but he could whip up a mean curried chicken.
My husband and I share the load. In fact he does most of the cooking :)
That bit about the friend wanting a woman with money to manage his house? I nearly spit out my coffee! It's like, dude, are you looking for a wife or a housekeeper? I mean, come on, it's 2024, not 1954!
I think what really gets me is this idea that household chores are somehow gendered. Like, last time I checked, dishes don't care who washes them, and laundry doesn't discriminate based on who folds it. It's all about teamwork and fairness.
It is such an old fashioned idea. I can’t believe it still exists in some households. For all his faults my husband is cooking dinner while I have a beer - and finish the farm books - right at this moment. Though I have been pretty busy so if he did not cook he would not eat and I would not notice.
I love the walkabout and the photos. Unfortunately, I' a bit deaf and even with hearing aids, I still have a problem hearing your commentary. And best of all the sounds of grunting and cock-a-d00-doodle doos. Why doesn't the cat go after the ducks? It's amazing to me that each creature stays with his or her own kind and doesn't chase others. Good luck in California; hope all goes well and you hurry home.
Those cats never chase anything though I found a murdered baby rabbit at the gate to the pigs yesterday!!sorry you cannot hear me. It is me Mumbling! I must remind myself to speak into the microphone. Maybe I should buy myself another one. I did have a mic at one point!
Our little flock of backyard chickens are so spoiled they won't eat a lot of the scraps and treats we offer them. A tasty of a tomato here, a grassy seed head peck, a try of a bread roll there. But without fail, the little sorrel weeds I pull from the garden are fought over time and time again.
We’ve composted for ages and lived in an RV for two summers a few years ago (before chickens.) I maybe collected our compost waste in the RV and saved it for when I knew we’d be somewhere with a compost receptacle! I know we’re new to one another here on Substack, but I’ve been happily reading your thoughts for years as Plumdirt (since abandoned) over on Wordpress. You also got me hooked on Janie’s Mill flours for my breads and gave me the confidence to workout good sourdough recipes. So thank you.
Oh Plumdirt! Yes! I do remember your name. And your comments. How lovely to find you here! What a joy. Glad to see your garden is doing so well too. I am quite chuffed to be able to follow YOU!
For a couple of years I collected acorns GALORE for the pigs down the road. They LOVED when I would pull up with my big white buckets and drag them over to their fence line. The opinions of the older farmers were very divided on feeding them acorns. A few said it made their meat very flavourful. And a few said it ruined the flavour. Do your walnuts change the flavour of your pork?
I believe that a variety of foods and lots of exercise contribute to good taste. I would LOVE someone to turn up with buckets of acorns. You would be very welcome here with loot like that. We have a small oak tree that Wai and a squirrel spend a lot of time under.

Thank you for the entertaining read Cecilia :)
Have a good week ahead.

Aren’t chickens funny! They love those greens! How many chickens do you have?
We only have six layers, as that is the allowed amount by the city. I would love to have more someday when we can.
6 is a lovely size. Sometimes when I travel I wish I could take a hen or little pig with me to eat the scraps i see people toss in the bin.
