TKG Take Ten: Thursday: The Old Barn is our Mother Ship
Keeping this old building standing is about love and warmth and heartbeats. But it is slowly sliding. A building that will decay and return to the earth is a gift.
So I embrace the decay and prop it up and repair it where I can. I believe it will stand for decades more - decay is a slow process and I will continue to fill it with animals, birds, and happy humans. Then it will return to the earth. Like me.
This is a reader supported publication so thank you so much for reading. 🦋 Your support is putting the sustainable in my Sustainable Sunday.
This barn is so old and so past it that we cannot even insure it anymore, let alone paint it (what small farmer can afford that luxury) but the barn, that almost has a soul all of its own, has forgiven me.
We should give this barn a name. I wonder if it has been given a name by all the generations it has served.
Can you see the ice? It's melting around the barn, which is nice, but I'm still walking very carefully. The rain has covered it, making everything shiny and a bit terrifying. I walk hunched because it's so slippery! I hate that; I look like my Grandpa! "Stand up straight, Cecilia!"
Have a lovely evening!
Leave me a comment. I always talk back.
I work tonight at my part time job at the tractor place - (these little farms don’t actually pay for themselves!). So I will pop in later.

If upgrading is not possible – and I completely understand if it's not – consider SHARING. There might be someone in your community who could use the comfort of spending 10 minutes on the farm. Let's spread gentleness during these tumultuous times.
I guess you're not too worried about the barn. It must have been really well-built to begin with to withstand the terrible wind and ice over the past hundred or more years. Things aren't nearly so well made today (understatement that, and sadly obvious.) I'm reminded of that wonderful scene in Witness when all the Amish come together to raise a barn in a single day. Lovely!
I can feel your love and affection for the barn, and I know you'll do your best to support it, as long as you and the barn are both able. wonderful
