He met me at the airport and immediately whipped my sunglasses off my face to clean them. He cannot bear dirty glasses. I laughed. I had not been able to catch up with him for years ...
I enjoyed this and your mom's pumpkin pie recipe sounds very good. My mom also cut out recipes from magazines and had a collection of hand written recipes she got from friends.
Her UCW (United Church Women) group she belonged to, as a fund raiser, published a couple of cookbooks with many of her and her friends' recipes in them, which I have. So when I need a mom recipe, I just reach for these cookbooks and the memories flow!
That was a really wonderful period. When they got together to make recipe books. I don’t think that far reached NZ but I have a few of those books in the states/ how lovely that your mums recipes are in there!
You say pumpkin pie. I say gramma (a type of squash-pumpkin) pie although often I don't bother with the pastry... adding lemon zest is key. And homemade custard.
That is really funny! The mayonnaise sandwiches! The other day I asked my grandson (4) what he wanted in his sandwich for lunch and he ran to the fridge and returned with the jar of mayo. I was dubious, being all health conscious and all, though it was whole grain bread. I asked my son how long this has been his favourite sandwich and he looked surprised - never heard of it before he said!
We had mustard sandwiches for most likely the same reason. (Although the bread would be homemade, we didn't eat store bought bread) Dad would add thinly sliced onions from the garden to the mustard sandwiches which was actually quite good.

Do you have the recipe book she made? These old ones are often so much fun to read.

More permanent than scraps of paper. They made money too. I believe at one point they made enough money to put a new roof on the church!

I think I know the pumpkin you mean - we called it squash - but with American listeners that would very quickly become confusing.
