Taking your own photos for Substack? Here are a few simple tips to help your images shine — with good composition, strong contrast, and just the right touch of clarity. Let’s dig in.
😂 well for reference photos and taking shots of the finished works for prints 🤗☕ plus I watch a youtuber who sings that line before his daily show on cameras
Cecilia, your post is basically the photography pep talk I didn’t know I needed. I am sadly not the photographer in the family. Ryan is :(
I’m now questioning why I’ve spent so long blaming my blurry pics on my ‘vintage’ Android when really, it’s me not crouching in a puddle to get the right angle. 😂
I have learned much from you over the years from your hints and lessons on photography! The biggest lesson being to change angles and not stand in the same place while taking the same picture! :) Elementary lesson from years ago, but it has helped me immensely. I'm still not very good at it, but still learning. Today's lessons are wonderful! Thank you!
I can't seem to bring the same vision to my photographic compositions as I do to my quilts. With a quilt, I can fiddle around with colour, adjacencies, intensity and composition, but i can't make it happen with a photo. I'll keep trying, but perhaps I should just stick to what I do well... Really beautiful photos, Miss C. I love the rich colours and the way you've used the light.
Loved seeing all the images with your explanation of what to look for. This is helpful for me since I am so much more of a word guy. Thanks for sharing some of what you've learned.
My favourite of this group was the donkey. With that shaft of light beaming straight at her. Such a lucky shot. You are a words guy - and very good with words you are!
Well, I always knew you took good photos -have seen plenty of them thru' the years. Had not thought of coming to read your post and having a lesson of 'how to' tho' ! Simple and logical as all your stuff! Am not clicking much at the moment but my strong point always has been composition - that does not seem to need knowledge but just a sense of 'this looks right' or not? Hoping all well Down South . . . oh, thought you ten years younger actually . . . where has time gone etc et al :) !
Excellent advice and stunning photos. I love the one of the caravan.
Yes! The caravan. Out in the desert.
All I want is the perfect camera
Says the ARTIST! 😂

Yes. Documenting your paintings needs good colour saturation so you get it right. I see your point.

Thank you for the wisdom my friend.
Happy May :)
The puddle is critical, Neela!! And your photos are fine. Your squirrels are lovely.
Most of them were taken by the hubby but some were me and you can probably tell the difference. Thank you Cecilia…..

Maybe you should photograph images that look quilt-like. Using your skill with quilts and colour. That might be interesting.
Very good tips and advice. I would add two more C's - Closer and Crop.
Your pictures are good. I like seeing them.
Great additions Jim! Have a great afternoon!
