While reading Wind in the Willows, I am struck by the descriptions of the natural world - particularly the vivid portrayal of winter in this imaginary yet deeply familiar landscape. The river, the woods, the burrows. I love how the animal characters are allowed to rest in winter, how this is accepted without judgment. Rat and Otter can sit by the fire and chat for hours, undisturbed by guilt or intrusive phones.
There is so much to listen to in this chapter.
I am writing to you today by the fire, my dinner cooking on top of the woodstove. I love the parallels. Mole is such an honest creature, he simply leaves his home and moves in with Ratty. He loves being underground but concedes that his love for open pastures and the comfort of hedgerows is real, it makes him feel safe but in a different way to how the burrows underground also make him feel safe and content.
Badger’s commentary on the fickleness of people: "Live and let live," he says. A lesson for us all.
Feeling safe is okay. Feeling safe is good.

I hope you all have a lovely evening or afternoon or morning - wherever you are in the world.
Take care and talk soon!
